Food Pantries

Friends of the Poor operates daily food pantries at Jackson Terrace and Valley View Terrace in Scranton. We operate additional food pantries in Scranton, Carbondale, and Jermyn that are open once or twice per month. Individuals may receive food twice a month (excluding the pantries in Jermyn and Finch Towers). First-time recipients must have ID or an ACCESS card.

Big Friends Little Friends

Children of the Valley View development are provided with college mentors every Monday and Thursday during the school year to help with homework and educational activities. The after school program is overseen by a local teacher from the Scranton School District. The children also recieve a nutritious meal provided by the Weinberg Food Bank. A similar program is offered at the Washington Plaza development on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Clothes Line For Men

This program supports men who are low income and in need of clothing for work, interviews or special occasions. The program is by referral and appointment only. Agencies can refer men using our referral form. Donations are accepted on-site once a week.

Furniture Bank

Friends of the Poor coordinates a furniture bank. Donations of furniture are received and sorted and made available for distribution. Those in need of furniture may call to complete a furniture request form.

Dollar Energy Water Assistance

Friends of the Poor acts as a referral site for the federal Dollar Energy program. It provides qualifying North East PA applicants with a grant to reactivate water service when it has been shut off.

Material Assistance and Referrals

Anyone is welcome to come to Friends of the Poor in times of crisis. When possible, we assist in filling their need or we refer people to other agencies that can help.
